When we think of Yiddish culture in Eastern Europe we think of newspapers, theater, lullabies, books - but do we ever imagine shtetl Jews going out for soccer, volleyball, rowing, swimming?

Yet the burgeoning sports activities that captured the Jewish youth between the Wars, from Bialystok to Grodno, Warsaw to Kiev, were a reflection of all the elements of modern Yiddish culture: passionate politics and idealism; improving not only oneself but the entire Jewish identity; and, of course - impressing the opposite sex.
